If you notice that your dog’s eating habits have decreased significantly or maybe she’s stopped eating entirely, it is important to take action immediately. Don’t wait!

There are many potential reasons why your dog isn’t eating enough. For example, your pup may be getting older and naturally has a smaller appetite, or maybe she’s on a medication that suppresses her appetite.

It’s also possible that your dog could have a disease or illness that is repressing her appetite. If your dog isn’t eating enough, the lack of nutrition could negatively impact her health, which is why you must act fast.

Fortunately, there are many things that you can do to help stimulate your pup’s appetite. If your dog is experiencing a prolonged lack of appetite, however, consult your veterinarian as there could be a significant physical, mental, or emotional issue that requires specialized treatment.

To help your dog stay healthy until her appetite returns, consider trying out these ways to stimulate your dog’s appetite.

3 Ways to Stimulate Your Dog’s Appetite

1. Make your dog’s food more appetizing

A bowl of dry kibble may not be the most appetizing dish to your dog. If her appetite is dwindling, consider changing up the menu and offer her something a little tastier to entice her to eat.

For example, you might consider feeding your dog a moist food instead. Canned dog food more closely resembles the food that a dog would naturally eat in the wild and may make your dog more inclined to eat.

Another option is to incorporate some gravy or cooked chicken into your dog’s meals. With the presence of such a delectable treat, she will likely find her food hard to resist.

When serving people foods, remember that your dog should never eat salt or other spices, onions, garlic, grapes, and chocolate, among other foods. Always consult your veterinarian when you have questions about which foods are safe for your dog.

2. Help her get exercise

One of the best ways to stimulate your dog’s appetite is to simply allow her to get regular exercise. Before you feed your dog, try taking her on a walk, playing a game of fetch, or letting her run around at a dog park to work up an appetite.

If the weather doesn’t permit your dog getting exercise outside, try simply playing with her inside with some dog toys. Ideally, you should provide your dog with the ability to get exercise once a day or at least multiple times a week. Doing so should help improve her appetite, assuming there is no underlying medical cause.

3. Try giving your dog CBD oil

CBD oil has been known to help improve appetite in both humans and pets. In addition to stimulating your dog’s appetite, it can also help soothe nausea and vomiting so that she can digest and receive nourishment from the food.

As such, CBD oil can be very beneficial for regulating the eating behavior of your pouch if she’s experiencing appetite loss. To allow your dog to receive the benefits of CBD oil, you can add a few drops of oil to her food or feed treats infused with CBD oil.

In the case that your dog isn’t eating at all, you could give her a CBD oil tincture by placing a few drops of the oil into her mouth. Learn more about CBD oil here.

While there aren’t any significant known negative side effects of CBD oil for dogs, it’s important to consult your veterinarian before giving your dog CBD oil to determine the right dosage. And always, I highly recommend working with your vet to plot out the best course of action for keeping your dog healthy and happy.
